IV:
Permits

Residency permits are granted by UDI. Each case is different and it might be a frustrating and confusing process before you obtain your residency permit. The regulations can be subject of changes, so keep yourself updated with the latest information. We are happy to offer advice and answer your questions, if you have any.

EEA/EU citizens who work, study or live in Norway need to register upon arrival. While you don’t need a permit you do need to have grounds to stay through work, study or living by your own means. Check out these links:

Non EEA/EU citizens

Verdensrommet is an artist platform for non-EU artists in Norway. They have published useful information on how to apply for permits and other issues. They also have a Facebook page which is useful to connect to other non-EU artists and exchange experiences. Check out their webpage here: https://www.verdensrommet.network

UDI gives permits to foreigners from outside EEA / EU. The common permits are work permits, study permits or family reunion. Be aware that for a work permit they require that you work within your professional field, and mainly be self-employed or employed. Be aware of some exemptions - check them out at udi.no and https://www.udiregelverk.no/no/rettskilder/udi-rundskriv/rs-2014-009/.

If you apply for a work permit you can apply to get an exemption to have your own artist company. Talk to UDI beforehand. If you apply as self-employed you’ll need to make a business plan to show how you are going to reach the income requirements.

If you are studying in Norway be aware of the income-regulations: there is a limit for how much money you can earn. Be also aware about different regulations for EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA citizens. Check the latest regulation at udi.no and other students experiences through https://www.verdensrommet.network If you have a higher income than what you are allowed you risk punishment, like fines or expulsion from Norway. Also be aware that you are not allowed to have your own company, be self-employed as a student. When you finish your studies you can apply for a one-year job seeking visa.
